Grown Healthy: Apple

posted in: Uncategorized | 12

Apple is the one fruit that never is out of season and grocery stores are filled with them. It could be due to the fact that there are 25,000 different kinds of apples in United States alone.

When choosing apples choose apples that turn brown quicker when peeled because those have the most health benefits.

You also want to eat the peels because they are packed with fiber and quercetin. I love apple juice and will still enjoy juicing apples but we will choose to make shakes more often with the whole apple, peel and all.

Apples are said to help prevent constipation, control diabetes, prevent cancer, and lower the risk of heart disease.

Danver Dan’s Apple Patch:

Each year we look forward to going to Apple Hill because a day spent picking apples and eating apple pie is a great day. There are so many different farms to choose from. This year we stopped by Denver Dan’s and were so glad we did. This is one of the best farms to choose because they offer apple pie class, apple wreath class, and u-pick apples. We participated in the apple pie class and our kids loved it. Wow did the mini pies taste good. We ate them all before we got in the car and who can blame us when the aroma is so strong.

Located: 4354 Bumblebee Ln. Camino, Ca 95709 Call (530) 644-6881 to book your apple pie or wreath class.

Drawing Apples:

Drawing the eaten apple was so fun because they got to eat the apple as they drew. The art program that we have been using is http://artventure.com.au.

Use the code HOMEGROWNADVENTURES.

Anatomy of an Apple:

We love to learn about the different parts of fruit. It is always interesting to learn that each part of a fruit has a different name.

The apple is classified as a Pome, meaning apple in French.

Apple Pie:

This pie filling is like applesauce.

To make the filling peel 4 apples and place them in a pot of boiling water. Let them boil until soft. This process should only take a few minutes. Once soft drain the water. Place the apples back in a pot (without water) and add 2 cups of sugar and 2 tablespoons of cinnamon. Mix constantly for 30 minutes on low heat.

To make the dough you need 1 1/4 cups of flour, 1/4 tablespoons salt, 1/2 cup shortening, and 3 tablespoons of cold water. You want to wisk the salt in the blender and add cold shortening until the mixture looks like crumbs. Then add water to the flour. Add more water if you need to. Gather dough into a ball shape. Sprinkle flour on the counter and place dough on top of it. Roll out dough and put on pie plate. Place filling inside.

To make dough leaf you need a large washed and dry leaf. Place the leaf on top of rolled out dough and cut it using kitchen scissors.

Place pie in the oven on 350 degrees Fahrenheit  for 30-40 minuets.

Apple Smoothie:

What you need: two apples, 1 cup of vanilla yogurt, 1/2 cups of milk, handful of almonds, 1 tablespoon of honey, and a pinch of cinnamon. Put everything in the blender except for the cinnamon. Place the smoothie in a cup and sprinkle cinnamon on top. Enjoy. 🙂

Apple Candy:

What you need: granny apples, chocolate, nuts, craft or wooden sticks, and any other yummy snack you want to sprinkle your apple with.

You first want to melt your chocolate in the microwave for 30 second intervals. It should not take more than 2 minutes. Mix well and dip the apple using the stick. Then sprinkle on any yummy treat you can think of.

Tip : buy the chocolate melts not regular chocolate chips.

There are so many yummy ways we can enjoy apples. Thank you for reading our post. We share a new blog post every Monday and Thursday, 8 pm Pacific Time.

Looks like an amazing place! I love how interactive and learning-based the apple orchard was – those leaf pie embellishments are beautiful.

We love Apple Hill! We’re in Auburn so it’s less than an hour from us. There are so many great farms there and I agree that it’s an awesome learning experience!

My son eats an apple everyday for his school snack! I should follow the same practice. The pie looks great; I have never been brave enough to make an apple pie.

Apple juice is my favorite! It’s great to see kids doing such unique hands on learning activities. I’ve never had an apple smoothie. I’ll have to give that a try!
