Winter Capsule Wardrobe

I finally did it! I have been wanting to start a capsule wardrobe for so many years. I just was never brave enough to actually do it. I started a capsule wardrobe because I wanted to simplify my life. I hated that I was wearing the same clothes. The items in my closet that I didn’t really like or felt good in on a daily basis. My favorite items would just lay there in my closet. I also felt like I did not have anything to wear especially when we would go on vacation. I hated that I felt like I had to go shopping before every trip. Since we live in the country I’d often times stop by the thrift store and grab random things just so I could have something different to wear. I’d only wear it once and then donate it back to the thrift store months later. It was ridicules, I know.

I now enjoy wearing the clothes that I own. I kept 29 items in my winter capsule wardrobe. Hats, shoes, and accessories are included in my 29 items.

I donated a lot of my clothes. I pretty much got rid of things that I didn’t really like or wore much. I had about 15 spring/summer pieces that I put in a container and it is now kept in my garage which I’ll bring out in the Spring.

I want to try the capsule wardrobe for an entire year. I read many positive things about capsule wardrobes and a few negative things and I want to see if it works well for my lifestyle.

We travel often so I need about ten outfits every season. If we did not travel then I’d need less items in my capsule wardrobe.

I’m not sure if I’m going to have a different capsule wardrobe every season or combine Spring /Summer and Fall/Winter.

Next year if I continue to do the capsule wardrobe I’ll take out 2 to 3 times from this capsule wardrobe and add 2 to 3 new items.

I only got 3 new items. All the other items I’ve had for some time now.

Below is a breakdown of my items in my wardrobe:

  • 2 coats
  • 3 jackets
  • 1 sweater
  • 3 pairs of shoes
  • 3 dresses
  • 1 hat
  • 1 hairpiece
  • 1 necklace
  • 5 shirts
  • 3 jean pants
  • 1 dressy pants
  • 5 skirts

I like bottoms more than tops. I know many who own more tops than bottoms but I usually look for bottoms when I go shopping. I also love skirts and dresses. In the winter I have more pants than I would in the spring and summer. I love hair pieces but because it is cold I have decided to only keep one hat and one hairpiece. In the spring/summer I’ll have more hairpieces and less jackets or coats.

Item 1,2, & 3:

My Deep Indigo Denim Belted Shirtdress is from eShakti. I love denim dresses. I loved that I was able to customize my dress so that the sleeves, length of the dress, neckline, and size was made to my liking.

My pink flower hair piece I bought years ago at the mall. I can not remember from which store.

My Carlos by Carlos Santana shoes are from the thrift store. They have been outworn and I’m afraid this might be the last season I’ll be able to wear them.

4,5,6, &7:

My skirt is from Anthropology. I bought it a few years back and I just love how it feels and looks.

My black lacy shirt is from a local antique shop I bought near my house. I got it two years ago. It is short sleeves so I can wear it all year round.

My jacket is from Guess I got it many years ago. I like fitted jackets.

My black t-strap Mary Jane kitten heels are from Unique Vintage.

8 & 9:

My red jacket is from Banana Republic. I’ve had it for a few years and just love how soft it feels and it goes so well with black.

My unique vintage 1960s black & white plaid stretch knit cap sleeve Holly wiggle dress is from Unique Vintage.

10, 11, & 12:

My long sleeve shirt is from Guess. I love the lace on it. I love fitted shirts with lace on them.

My black necklace is from an antique shop. It is the only not real gold necklace I own.

My geometric pencil skirt is from Banana Republic. I’ve had it for a few years now. It is one of my favorite skirts.

Items 13 &14:

My burgundy/pink velvet pants are from Old Navy. I bought them last year in the Fall.

My lace top is from Guess. I bought it years ago.

My hat is from Banana Republic. I bought it a year ago.

My navy blue jacket is from Banana Republic and I also bought it a few years ago.

My skirt below the knees is from BCBG. It is one of my favorite skirts. I wear it often during the entire year and I even wear it when I go hiking.

Items 24 & 25

My white stripe cap sleeve Estelle blouse is from Unique Vintage.

My 1940s style high waist crepe full moon sailor slacks are from Unique Vintage. They have pockets in them and are extremely comfortable. They make me look very tall and thin.

Items 26, 27, 28, 29:

I have included a pair of blue denim jeans that I bought last Fall from Old Navy in my wardrobe.

I kept a gray sweater which I also bought last Fall from Old Navy. I’m not a sweater person but it can get cold so I included one in my Winter Wardrobe.

I also included my denim pencil skirt that I bought at a antique shop near my house a few years ago.

My last item is my black short dressy coat that I bought a few years back from BCBG.

The items I just mentioned can be seen in the video below.

Have you heard of a capsule wardrobe before? Would you try it?

My 12 year old daughter Esther took pictures and the video of me. She also braided my hair. Thanks Esther!!!!

I love the outfits you choose to keep. I don’t have a capsule wardrobe but when we moved I gave away 95% of my clothes and I have slowly been rebuilding to items that I love only. It’s been slow and I plan to keep it small.

Great pics of all the cloths in your capsule wardrobe!! I love the skirted outfits a lot!!! Esther did a fantastic job of taking the photos!!! Like you i am afraid to do a capsule wardrobe for the fear of all the things i would be missing out on. one day i will have to fight the fear and give it a try.

I’ve always wanted to do a capsule wardrobe for a lot of the same reasons as you – I feel like I wear the same few pieces all the time and other things never get worn. I’d really like to simplify my wardrobe and have a few pieces I absolutely love rather than a ton of pieces that don’t get worn. Very inspirational!

These outfits are all so cute! There is not one that I wouldn’t wear. I love the flower embroidered dress and the pink headpiece from your first outfit. You have an amazing sense of style. The idea of a capsule wardrobe is awesome as well!

Oh wow, I love the pieces that you have in your capsule wardrobe! You have such great style. I think it’s about time I cleaned out my closet and made a capsule wardrobe for myself.

I have been wanting to create a capsule wardrobe for a long time too!! I know that it will make life so much easier but I just haven’t put the effort into creating one yet! I love all of your outfits especially love that skirt from Anthropology! I love the look of a pencil skirt but it is so hard to find one that is a good length for me as I’m only 5ft!

all of your outfits look amazing! I have been loving capsule wardrobes lately! Granted, I live in Florida so I don’t change out much for seasons since it goes from hot to rather warm and only cold about 3 days a year lol

A capsule wardrobe is such a good idea and yet something I’ve never done myself. I really ought to try it. Then again, I’d have to have a few more dresses as I love dresses.

  11. Rachel

I like the look of your outfits. I figure if you are going to have a few things to intermix they better be fantastic!

  12. Terri Beavers

Oh wow, now I realize how boring my wardrobe is. I’ve got to buy some new pieces and I’m sure I have tons of things I could give away to make more room.

I love the outfits you picked out for your capsule. Really very inspiring! It’s so cold here, so our outfits are a little bit different!

Mommy you are wardrobe goals. I love all your outfits. You look absolutely gorgeous. And all credit to your daughter for taking such fabulous pics of you. I keep hearing of capsule wardrobes. if anything I think it is much needed to clear the tumbling out mess that is my wardrobe. Your post here gives me the courage to try this. Maybe the summer is a good time to get this done.
