East Bay Weekend

What do you think of stay-cations ? (vacationing and seeing tourist attractions where you live).

If we are not on one of our roadtrips then we are enjoying a staycation.

You see Saturdays are not our cleaning days. We clean for one hour daily four days a week.

Since we live in California there is so much to do and see that doesn’t require us to drive far and spend money on a hotel stay. We can also bring our own food with us and enjoy a picnic.

Staycations are less expensive, you also don’t have to pack a lot.

Why not visit your town like a tourist?

Go to your local visitor center. Stop by at that museum that you have been passing by for years on your way to work. Hike locally.

Rosie the Riveter/World War 2 Home Front

Rosie the Riveter has been a character that we knew mostly by design. While much of what makes this character iconic is the design there is also a greater context to it. Going to Rosie the Riveter/World War 2 Home Front National Historical Park definitely gave us more context. Rosie the Riveter is a influential propaganda icon which has helped women’s rights. Due to men being on the battlefield America needed people in the defense force which truly made a barrier in American society. You can learn how Kaiser got started. It was one of the first major employers of women in the defense industry. We loved learning about what happened then and apply it to what is happening now.

SS Red Oak Victory AK-235

Permanente Metals Corporation was building ships to be used in war during World War 2. They built the SS Red Oak Victory Ak-235 in 1944. This cargo ship was used during World War 2, the Vietnam War, and the Korean War. At max capacity this ship can hold 15,580 long tons of cargo. There are 10 guns on this ship. It was originally a merchant marine vessel and was soon turned into a ship for the United States Navy. In 1998, this ship was placed in Richmond and became part of the Rosie The Riveter/World War 2 Home Front National Historical Park.

John Muir National Historic Site

In 1868, John Muir went to California and saw Yosemite for the first time. This land inspired him to start his work on preserving land through the National Park System. He didn’t began trying to make Yosemite a National Park until 1889 after seeing Yellowstone become a national park. In 1914 he died. For majority of his life he traveled but during the last years he called Martinez his home. After marrying in 1880 he became part of the Strentzel family which was a fruit-ranching people by trade. So he participated in fruit ranching from 1882-1887.  Here you can find his house, his trees, and even the desk he wrote many of his books on. This is a must visit for anyone who looks up to John Muir.

Round Valley Regional Preserve

Miwok Trail and Hardy Canyon Loop Trail is one we enjoyed hiking on. This loop is 4.9 miles long and has plenty of scenery. There is a lot of grass as you look towards the fields and plenty of trees near the trail so there is a lot of shade. When we were here the loop was very muddy in spots. We brought boots because there had been a lot of rain. All of our shoes needed to get cleaned when we got home but that is the best part of hiking during fall in certain regions. We found horsehair worms in a puddle and figured they are parasites and confirmed it when we got home. Thankfully they are only harmful to a selection of insects. During this entire hike we were anticipating rain. This preserve is beautiful and there are a variety of trails to choose from.
