Kern County Road Trip

What do you miss the most when your traveling?

I always thought that we would love to travel full time and that we didn’t need a home base until after we were on the road traveling for one month that I realized that there is no place like home.

Traveling is a big part of our life. It always has been and always will be. Traveling is the only thing we never regret spending money on.

But I miss my own bed and bathroom. Knowing that no one else slept in our bed or used our bathroom is an amazing feeling. You feel absolutely free at home.

There is also nothing like homemade food made from scratch. Because we are usually on the go and not every place we stay at has a kitchen we eat lots of sandwiches or finger foods. If we have been on a road trip for two weeks or more, as soon as we get home we make soup for lunch and dinner for a week.

I never thought I’d miss routine as much as I do. Sure we still wake up at 5am in the morning even while we are on vacation but our routine is still different from what we do at home.

Exotic Feline Breeding Compound

As we walked into the Exotic Feline Breeding Compound Feline Conservation Center we saw the cutest cat we ever did see. There was an employee handling a sand cat in the gift shop.
And the coolest thing of all is that we learned that sand cats can go their entire life without drinking any water because they can get everything they need from feeding on their prey.

One of the first cats we saw was a jaguarundi which is a small cat that has a body that looks very similar to that of a jaguar. We also saw a clouded leopard which seems to pull out its fur when cleaning itself. We also saw a mountain lion which was fed by humans regularly in Orange County so to remove the risk of it becoming hostile they took it to this breeding compound. There is so many amazing cats to look at here.

Burger Spot in Tehachapi, CA

Since 1956 Burger Spot has been serving food in Tehachapi, California. The entire restaurant is aesthetically very nostalgic. Everything is themed around when this restaurant came to be complete with arcade machines and 50’s music playing the entire time. The thing that caught our attention about this burger joint is that they offer a ostrich burger. It is basically a burger with ostrich meat instead of beef. The thing about the ostrich meat is that it is very fresh. Esther and Peter both ordered it but we were told that they only had one party left. The ostrich meat here comes from a local ostrich farm called Tehachapi Ostrich Farm. There are few places that serve ostrich meat at all and Burger Spot is one that does.

Tehachapi Depot Railroad Museum

It is amazing that the Tehachapi Railroad Depot Museum exists today. This is because in 2008 the depot was on fire and burned the entire building except for a corner of it. Because the corner was still there they rebuilt it like it was in the past otherwise it might have been totally redesigned. This depot has plenty of trains going past it and it has been this way since 1904 when the depot was built. The railroad that is built beside  it was installed in 1876. At this museum you get to look into how trains operated as well as a lot of artifacts that were once on trains. They had plates here which is something we’ve never really seen in railroad museums.

The Borax Visitor Center

Borax is a company who mines, processes, and distributes borates. They are best known for selling the borate called borax in particular. The Rio Tinto Borax Mine Visitor Center is a good place to learn things about this mine and borax. Borax can be found all over your home, from soaps to fiberglass, from play dough to laundry detergent, and so much more. Borates are collected at this mine and not only a few but almost half of the supply in the world. This is also California’s largest open pit mine which has consistently been getting larger since the 1920s. Having supported the local community with employment and offering the entire world their supplies.

 Borax Crystals

What you need:

  • 6 cups of water
  • 3 cups of borax
  • pipe cleaners
  • thread/string
  • stick
  • food coloring

Put six cups of water in a pot and bring to a boil. While the water is getting warm, you’ll want to make your design using the pipe cleaners. Tie the pipe cleaner to the string that is attached to the wooden stick.

You will want to slowly add the borax to the boiling water, mixing constantly until the borax has dissolved. Now you add food coloring. You first want to dip your pipe cleaner creation into the water a few times and then let it stay submerged in the water. Cover your pot with a lid or plate and let sit overnight.

If there is crystals on your pot you can remove them by putting hot water in the pot.
