“The more that children are being monitored, the more opportunities they have to build their self-control. Monitoring is a crucial aspect of self-control, and two parents can generally do a better job of monitoring.

Anything that forces children to exercise their self-control muscle can be helpful; taking music lessons,  memorizing poems, saying prayers, minding their table manners, avoiding the use of profanity,  writing thank-you notes. ” – Willpower by Roy F. Baumeister and John Tierney

That is one of the major advantages of homeschooling and being with our children so much. We are able to help them strengthen their self-control.

Discipline and order is a good thing.

Recently we went out to eat for dinner and the waiter was so impressed with how well our chidren behaved and how they said “please” and “thank you.” Them having good table manners didn’t happen overnight.  We still have to remind them to occasionally sit up straight, finish everything on their plate, and not to interrupt when someone is speaking.

We also have a system.

I prepare the dinner (Esther helps sometimes). Peter sets up the table. Eve cleans up the table once we are finished eating. Esther does the dishes. Elizabeth sweaps up the kitchen and underneath the table.

National WWII Museum

The National WWII Museum is a great museum. It has well done exhibits and plenty of items from soldiers and others serving in the war and not only US soldiers. They have plenty of well made informative videos and unlike most museums this one consists of 3 buildings. There is a large selection of vehicles from the war especially planes which had their own building. We believe there is large importance in the fact that rather than being in Washington DC it is in New Orleans.

French Quarter

The French Quarter is the first section of New Orleans which is why so much is in the French Quarter and is why you should visit French Quarter. Because New Orleans is one of the first large cities and America. It was founded in 1718 and most of the buildings were built in the 1700s.

Café Du Monde

Café Du Monde is a great café and is a must try when near or in New Orleans. It is inspired by French cuisine and due to that it serves Beignets which are rare outside of Louisiana and France. If you have the time to try them you most certainly should.

Gumbo Ya-Ya & The Ruby Slipper Cafe

We have never tried such amazing food before. We love trying local foods. This is a must place to try.

Lafayette Cemetery No 1

Lafayette Cemetery No. 1 is a interesting cemetery there are 1,100 Family Tombs and 7,000 individual people buried here. It was founded in 1833 and the architecture follows the Neoclassicism movement of the time which revolves around artistry from Europe. This movements affect can still be seen in New Orleans culture today and this cemetery is a example of that.
