Oakland/Berkeley Day Trip

Do you consider yourself a traveler or a tourist?

We are definitely travelers but have a bit of tourists qualities as well.

We are tourists because we always have our camera with us. I absolutely love capturing our memories.  We also travel with a planned itinerary. We like booking our hotels, hostels, inns, and campsites ahead of time.

As travelers we love to experience new things. New adventures excite us. We enjoy getting out of our comfort zone.

Trying local food and talking to locals has to be one of the best parts of traveling which makes us travelers.

We prefer to be our own tour guides and we like traveling on our own. Getting off the beaten path to travel on less crowded or visited places makes us feel alive.

Lake Merritt

In the Bay Area of California there are very few lakes. Lake Merritt is a lake that is in the middle of Oakland. This lake is the first national historic landmark in the United States. This lake is also massive with a surface area of 140 acres. Lake Marriett is surrounded by a ton of buildings.

There is something about being surrounded by buildings and having a huge body of water next to you. Here you can find beaches, docks, and plenty of businesses near the shore. Once this was a place of hunting and fishing for the native Americans but over time this lake changed due to its surroundings and continues to change today.

The Cathedral of Christ the Light

The Cathedral of Christ the Light is a Catholic cathedral in Oakland which is extremely impressive. It was completed in 2008 and is the first cathedral built entirely in the 21st century. This building is amazing from simply a material standpoint. Inside of the cathedral there is beautiful Douglas fir with steel to hold it up above you. The sheer amount of glass that makes this building attractive from the outside gives the inside plenty of natural lighting.

Huckeberry Botanic Regional Preserve

This preserve is so beautiful.  It is amazing that it is so close to the city.

This 1.7 miles loop takes about two hours to finish. While your hiking you will learn about what native plants grow in this area. You can choose to start at the lower trailhead or the upper trailhead.  It is totally up to you but if you plan to make this hike a learning experience and you want to follow the interpretive panels from number one then we advise you to start with the upper trail.

Grizzly Peak Blvd. Overlook

Want to be blown away by the views of the Bay Area, San Francisco,  and Berkeley? Then you don’t want to miss this view. Many don’t even get out of their cars but simply enjoy this view from their vehicle. The view at night must be even more spectacular here. The road to get here is pretty winding.

Pizzaiolo

We came here for breakfast and simply loved everything we tried. They don’t have a lot of different choices to choose from but I’d rather have quality over quantity.

There food and ingredients are fresh.

We ordered the homemade frittata and breakfast sandwich. They even have healthier options such as bone broth.

We will definitely be back for lunch to try their oven stove pizza.
