Did you know that if your cat blinks slowly, it means that your cat trusts you?
While dogs use sight, hearing, and smell to navigate their surroundings, cats’ depend more on their sight. Cats’ eyes seem like they are glowing in the dark because they have a special layer of cells behind the retina called the tapetum lucidum. These cells act like a mirror. Cats have more rod cells than us and cats only need 1/6th of human light to see. They can spot motion faster than us but they can’t make out fine details or colors. They do require some light to see. They can’t see in pure darkness. God designed cats to have these amazing eyes so that they could survive and hunt.
Cats have an extra eyelid. It’s usually not visible. It is resting on the eyeball at the inside corner. The third eyelid helps the eyes clean and lubricated due to the fact that a cat seldom blinks. You can think of the third eyelid like a windshield wiper that comes across the eyes, dispersing tears and removing dust.
Russian blues are born with blue eyes. At about four months of age, you’ll see the green color come in. By the time the kitten turns one, they will have their beautiful emerald-green eyes. Eye color is determined by the amount of pigment in the iris. Green eyes have less pigment then blue. The intensity of the emerald-green eyes is determined by the lighting and the health of the cat.
