South East Oregon Trip

“Knowing why we are married and should stay married is crucial. The key question is this: Will we approach marriage from a God centered view or a self-centered view? In a self-centered view, we will maintain our marriage as long as our earthly comforts, desires, and expectations are met. In a God-centered view, we preserve our marriage because it brings glory to God and points a sinful world to a reconciling creator. More than seeing marriage as a mutual comfort, we must see it as a word picture of the most important news humans have ever received- that there is a divine relationship between God and his people.”- Gary Thomas

Time has a way of making things easier on you. A year ago our son Peter moved out. I cried a lot.
Now we are used to Peter not living with us. And we can ask him to stay with our girls and our homestead so we can take a few days away from everything and feel like a couple. Having older children is awesome. This time we drove to Oregon and soaked in the tub under the stars.

Lake Abert

You won’t find any fish in Oregon’s salt water lake. However, brine shrimp thrive in this kind of environment so if you love bird watching then you’ll love it here. You will want to make a stop here when you’re driving on Highway 395. You’ll find a turn out with a sign that reads : Lake Abert Watchable Wildlife. You can walk down a pathway to the lake. It is a great place to take pictures at. It is stunning here. There are areas that are still wet so you’ll want to avoid stepping into those. We saw car tire marks but we would not recommend you driving down here because you can get stuck. We were the only ones enjoying this beautiful white salty lake that is disappearing. Can you believe that this lake used to be sixteen feet deep but now is only two feet deep. As the water leaves so will the brine shrimp and with them the birds which feast on them.

Alvord Desert

There is something breathtaking about a desert. Now the crazy thing is that this white salty desert doesn’t have many visitors. We did see a family camping near it and there are plenty of car tracks seen but it was empty for just my husband and I to enjoy. This used to be a lake but is now all dried up. The salt minerals were formed because rainwater evaporated from this lake. The beautiful Steens mountain range can be seen from a distance. When you drive up to Alvord Desert you’ll come across Alvord Hot Springs.

Mann Lake

On our way to Alvord Desert we passed a sign that said Mann Lake. This is another playa lake. It is actually the largest one in Oregon. It was dry when we came here and stunning. If you come here when there is actually water you can fish here for rainbow and cutthroat trout.

Pete French Round Barn S.H.S

If your looking for inspiration for your next barn project then come here. It is named after the man who raised cattle here in 1872. No he didn’t only own one cow like we do but 45,000 cows. He was murdered in 1897 over land and water rights. Now this barn wasn’t used to house cattle in but was used for hay, wool, and supplies. French had horses pull wagons full of these things and taken to the market in Oregon City. You won’t find any cattle or horses here but you might spot an own.

Crane Hot Springs

I love soaking in hot springs and can sit in them most of the day. Why? Because hot springs or mineral pools are so good for your skin and your health. And I love a hot pool. Not a warm pool but a hot one. We stayed in Running Horse Teepee. We had a king size bed to enjoy as well as our very own private soaking tub that had a window for us to look out of. Early in the morning while everyone slept we enjoyed the Crane Hot Springs Pond. It was such a relaxing and wonderful getaway. The only downfall was not having our own restroom. They have many different sleeping options here. We will definitely come back here with our girls.
