Winter in Santa Cruz

What’s the best way to travel? ( plane, car, train, boat)

We love traveling using our own car. Now we can fly to get to our destination especially if it’s far away but once we arrive we always rent a car.

Why having a car is the best way to travel?

One word: Freedom!

We like to go where we want to go. We wake up early and head out to popular destinations while everyone else is just having their breakfast.

When your on a boat or train you have to follow someone’s else’s schedule. You have to wait in line. You loose lots of precious time. Your in a rush and always looking at your watch to make sure that you don’t miss your boat, plane, or train. This can be very stressful especially if you want to hike a trail you’ve never been on but you only have two hours left until the boat departures. What if the trail is harder then it looks? What if someone in your group slows you down? You end up feeling rushed and stressed out because time is not on your side.

New Brighton State Beach: Campground Northern End

This is one of those campgrounds that you find yourself wanting to return to. Why? It is all about the view. This time we got a spot where we had a view of the ocean which is a huge plus because we could have the food we cooked on the fire while enjoying the sunset. Cooking and eating here is pretty comfortable because you can store away your food, there is fire pit, and water nearby which is perfect for washing the cooking utensils and any other dishes you have. They have decent bathrooms and showers nearby which is a huge bonus especially if you spent the day at the beach playing in sand.

Santa Cruz Surfing Museum and Surfing Sculpture

Santa Cruz Surfing Museum is the first surfing museum in the world. Did you know that surfing came from Hawaii? Three Hawaiian princes came to this area in 1885 and surfed the San Lorenzo River. They must have left a profound impressions on the locals because the people here are passionate about surfing to this day. There are a lot of pictures here which are separated by decade and this really shows the breakthroughs and trends in surfing history. Nearby there is surfing sculpture made out of bronze which depicts a surfer with his surfboard. If you are here it is definitely worth your time. Admission is free.

Walton Lighthouse

If there is a lighthouse in the area, then we will be there. You see, we kind of have a thing for lighthouses. Here the waves crash on and through the rocks. Occasionally the waves spray high enough that in spreads across the concrete road. In a way this location is like a Getty but much more stable. While you walk you feel yourself getting closer to the lighthouse. This lighthouse was built in 1964 and had its current light lit in 2001. This lighthouse is closed but it is still worth your time getting close to it.

Seabright State Beach

This is a popular beach. You’ll find people flying kites, playing volleyball, and much more. I can see why so many dog owners come here. There really is a lot of space to do any activity that needs a lot of space. The variety of things you can do here is further enhanced due to the fact that Walton Lighthouse is right outside of this beach and if you want to visit the lighthouse this beach is basically unavoidable unless you take a boat. There is also a restroom nearby which is perfect for those who want to spend a day at the beach enjoying the sun, waves, sand, and each others company.

Santa Cruz Wharf

Santa Cruz Wharf is the longest wharf on the west coast of America meaning that it is 2,745 feet long. We fished here and didn’t have much luck. Peter got his first surf perch and a really small sturgeon. This wharf has stores and restaurants. We ate lunch at the Dolphin Restaurant. My husband had a grilled cheese and Peter had french toast while fishing. Meanwhile my daughters and I ate inside of the restaurant.

Located at 21 Municipal Wharf, Santa Cruz, CA 95060.
