5 stops to make on the way through Pacific North/West

Sometimes the stops along the way could be as much fun as the destination as long as it is something that you love or are interested in. Here are five stops we enjoyed on our road trip through Oregon and Washington.

For the History Lover

If your interested in history of the Northwest then you’ll love this stop. Most people don’t expect to see a replica of an original British Fort in Oregon. Here you can find a reconstruction of it with several buildings that show you the lifestyle and living conditions of a British soldier way before Oregon became a state. Fort Umpqua served as a fur trade operation along the Umpqua River, Klamath River, and Rogue River.

Located at 15850 State Highway 38 W Elkton, OR 97436.

For the Railroad Lover

This is the last covered railroad bridge that was built. We have seen many covered bridges and this one is in immaculate condition. The Chambers Railroad Bridge was last used in 1951 obviously they did not have a shortage of lumber considering that everyday trains carrying enough lumber to build 31 homes came through this bridge. We love wooden covered bridges because they are part of history and are no longer being made or used.

For the Food Lover

There is always lots of great stops for food lovers. Our favorite on this trip was a restaurant with a funky name. This place is called Pickled Fish. We loved the food but we were mostly impressed with its location. It is located on the 4th floor over looking the beach and ocean below. Talk about a meal with a view! The design and feel to the restaurant was refreshing with firewood neatly stacked up in little boxes which separated some of the tables.

Located at 409 Sid Snyder Dr. Long Beach, WA 98631.

For the Music Lover

Have you heard of the alternative musician Kurt Cobain? Maybe you don’t recognize his name but by his band group name Nirvana. Unless your a big fan you might not know that Aberdeen Washington was Kurt Cobains hometown and this is where he started writing songs and playing guitar. There is a place known as Kurt Cobain Landing and this is the official memorial park dedicated to this great musician who reached so many around the world with his music.

Located at E 2nd St. Aberdeen, WA 98520.

For the Botany Lover

One of the loveliest things to see is a field of 40 acres of Dahlias. This flower is not edible nor is it used for medical purposes but boy are they lovely. The dahlias is part of the daisy family. At Swan Island Dahlias you can see the largest dahlias grower in the nation. They have been in business for over 89 years. I’m not sure how they came up with the names of the variety of flowers but they sure were interesting. Some of the names that caught our attention was lover boy, I do, frozen, Santa Claus, I am a hottie, do not pick, or Jennifer’s wedding.

This looks like one amazing trip! The British fort that you mentioned in Oregon reminds me of Fort Edmonton Park in Alberta, Canada. It’s such a cool experience, and I’d love to be able to visit this place, as well!
