Grapefruit

Grapefruit is one of those citrus fruits you either love or hate. I love the taste of grapefruit and the process of eating a grapefruit. Now grapefruit is harder to eat than an orange because the membrane is so bitter. You can’t just take off the peel and eat the grapefruit. Instead you need to cut the grapefruit in half and you have to cut each segments so that it is free from its membrane. Only then by using a spoon you can scoop up the segments. If your having a hard time falling asleep grapefruit helps and gives you a deeper and better sleep. It also relieves stress and depression. Grapefruit is also great for treating acne.

Grapefruit Sorbet

Wow are these delicious. It tastes like ice-cream. Esther made it using heavy whipping cream and milk which makes it feel as if your eating ice-cream. You could use water instead but the heavy whipping cream is oh so yummy.

What you need:

1 cup of heavy whipping cream

1 cup of milk

1/2 cups of sugar

1 cup of grapefruit juice (squeezed from real grapefruit)

zest from the grapefruit

Mix all the ingredients together and put in the freezer. Once frozen use fork to defrost it. Then scoop into the grapefruit skins which look like bowls. This recipe is good for one whole grape fruit (2 bowls). Esther gave each of her siblings a small amount but it is best if you fill the entire grapefruit bowl. You can add some mint and sprinkle some fresh grapefruit on top of the sorbet.

Agar-Agar Grapefruit Cake

We love this cake so much. It is seriously our favorite. It is so light and fruity. It is like gelatin but even better because gelatin comes from animal skin and bones while Agar-Agar comes from red algae. Also Agar-Agar is harder than gelatin so the cake will be firm and not jiggly. The best part is that this cake is so easy to make and you really can not go wrong with making this cake.  When I went to college I became dear friends with Salma whose religion is Muslim. We watched each others children for one semester. I watched her son twice a week and she watched my children the other two days. Once I brought gummy bears to her house and she told me that she was not able to eat them because they were made out of gelatin. I learned so much about her culture and religion. Everyone can enjoy this cake whether your friend is vegetarian or vegan. Esther chose to make one layer but you can make three layers if you’d like.

All you need is dry Agar-Agar and lots of different fruits. Esther included sliced grapefruits in this cake.

To make the Agar-Agar cake you will need …

2 cups of water

2 tablespoons of Agar-Agar

1/4 cups of sugar

2 cups of fruit

You always want to add the Agar-Agar to cold water. Add the two together in a saucepan. Keep stirring until the Agar-Agar dissolves. When you have no specks on the spoon then your ready to take it off the heat. You want to cover a thin layer of the cake pan before you add fruit. Then add your fruit and cover with the remaining Agar-Agar. We stopped here but you can do more layers with coconut milk. Let the cake set. You can leave it on the counter to set or place in the fridge for a few hours. Once completely set use a spatula and go around the sides of the cake tin to help release the pressure. Place a plate upside down and invert the cake pan. Then enjoy. We ate it all in one sitting.

Candied Grapefruit Peels

My dad blessed us with a box of Marsh grapefruit. The skin of this grapefruit is yellow. I have never personally seen this type of grapefruit sold at the store. My dad picked them at an orchard so these grapefruits were organic. You want the fruit to be organic if you plan to do this.

While I went for a run Esther and Peter made these yummy candied grapefruit peels. I love that they know that they can use every part of the grapefruit. Makes me so happy. To get started you will want to wash about three large grapefruits or six small grapefruits. Cut them into thin strips. You first want to place the peels in a pot and then cover the peels in water. Bring the peel to a boil. Repeat this process three or more times. Each time you want to drain the hot water and fill the peels with cool water again and again. Next you will want to add the 3/4 water, 2 cups of sugar, 1/2 cups of light corn syrup, and the grapefruit peels. Bring it to a boil and reduce the heat and simmer for 45 minutes. You’ll want to mix throughout this process. Once you’ll see the peels turn translucent you can remove the peels from the heat. Then turn your oven to 250 F. You’ll want to line a pan with parchment paper. Bake for about 45 minutes. Take out of the oven and toss the peels in sugar. After the peels are coated in sugar you’ll want to place the peels in a jar and in the fridge.

Broiled Grapefruit

We really enjoy our fruit grilled. It gives the fruit a different taste so if you don’t like fresh grapefruit maybe you would like broiled grapefruit. One benefit of grilled grape fruit is that you don’t have to peel the skins off. Cut the grapefruit in half. Use a sharp knife and cut around the inside edge of the grapefruit. Then you want to cut each segment of the membrane. Sprinkle with cinnamon and brown sugar. Broil for 15 to 20 minutes or until the top of the grapefruit is brown. We added yogurt, blueberry, and mint . Eat and serve warm.

Grapefruit Sugar Scrub

What is there not to love about a citrus smelling scrub? We love making our own scrubs. There is just something about homemade things. This is perfect to give to a friend or loved one.

What you need is…

3 cups of granulated sugar

1/2 cups of coconut oil

1/2 cups of freshly squeezed grapefruit juice

8 drops of grapefruit essential oil

1/3 tablespoon of almond extract

Mix all ingredients well together. Keep in a tight container in the fridge. When using the scrub simply massage onto skin and rinse off. I like to take the scrub with me in the shower for an easier cleanup. Your skin will feel so soft and the smell so fresh. My girls even tried it. I love that all of these ingredients are safe. We totally don’t recommend you to eat the sugar scrub but if on accident one of your kids decides to try it you don’t have to worry.
