How to Build a Bottle Fence

We have been collecting bottles for a few years now because we wanted to create a unique upcycle fence. Wine bottles can’t be turned in at recycle centers so we keep ours for projects like this.

We loved using different colors and found blue to be our favorite. We decided our fence location because we can see this area when we sit at the dinning table. The sun always rises in that direction and we thought that the sunshine hitting the glass would make it even more spectacular. Darker glass reflect more sunlight.

You will want to use a diamond drill bit and drill holes on the bottom of each bottle. Keeping the bottles in the water while drilling the hole and slowly turning the bottles makes it easier. We first drilled all the holes in the bottles. That took about half a day. After that we put all the bottles in a small kid pool so we could take off all the labels. We used a sponge, dish soap, and a knife to peel the labels off.

We buried and cemented three metal fence poles. One of the poles was placed in the start of our fence, in the middle, and at the end. We used metal brackets to hold the wood in place. We bought two 2 by 4 pressure treated wood and drilled evenly spaced holes to let the rebar go through. When we were ready to put the glass bottles on the rebar we first lined them up on the grass and then placed them through the rebar. We trimmed the rebar to the size we wanted our fence to be.

This was a family project that lasted two days to complete. The thing that took the longest was collecting all those bottles.
