Jackfruit

We tried jackfruit for the first time in Oregon. When we stood in line to purchase it we talked to the lady in line behind us and she told us that she did not like the taste of jackfruit. We stood there questioning if we should spend over $20 on a fruit that we might not like. But since experience has no price tag for us we decided to still buy the jackfruit and try it. We were so happy that we did because we loved it. Jackfruit tastes like a mixture of banana, pineapple, and mango. The smell isn’t very pleasant, getting to the fruit is a lot of work, and it is one sticky fruit. With all that being said, we don’t mind all of that because we really enjoy this unique fruit. Recently we saw that they had jackfruit at our local Safeway so we bought the fruit, cleaned it, and placed in the fridge so that we could start making things the following day but that never happened because the fruit was all gone by the next day. So we had to buy another jackfruit, clean it, and make things with it within a few minutes from taking out the fruit pods or else none would be left. We love jackfruit as is and it is probably our favorite way to eat jackfruit but there are so many great ways to enjoy jackfruit.

Opening a Jackfruit

When jackfruit is sweet and ripe, it will have a unique odor to it. Once you get into the jackfruit you will notice that your fingers will become covered with sticky sap. If you mind the sap you might want to wear gloves or put oil on your hands as well as the knife you will be using. Cut the jackfruit in half. The more you cut it in smaller pieces the easier it becomes to take the fruit pods out. In the fruit pods you will find the seed shells and seeds. You want to discard the seed shell but keep the seed.

The more hands you have the faster this job becomes.

Keep the Seeds

We love that we were not only able to eat the fruit but the seeds as well. The seeds taste similar to chestnuts. There are three ways you can enjoy the seeds: fry, bake, or boil. We tried frying them by chopping them and adding oil, red chilly, and salt for a few minutes. We also bakes them on 400 F for twenty minutes.

If you do not want to eat them because you don’t like seeds you can use it as a facemask by grinding the seeds with some honey and milk. Leave on face until dry then wash with warm water.

Fried Jackfruit

If you enjoy eating fruit or vegetables seep fried then you’ll want to try jackfruit fried.

All you need is jackfruit, oil to deep fry, rice flour, sugar, salt, and 1 cup water. You want the mixture to be thick but smooth. We did not measure anything really. We just saw and knew the consistency we wanted the mixture to be.

Pour oil in pan and one oil is hot place jackfruit covered in batter into the oil. Be very careful around oil. Wait until they are crisp.

Jackfruit Chips

You want to cut up the jackfruit into strips and then heat a pan on oil. Place some turmeric and salt on the fruit before placing in oil. Fry until crisp to your liking.

Enjoying Jackfruit

There are so many different ways to enjoy jackfruit. We really recommend you buying and trying jackfruit. We like eating them fresh the most. If you love tropical fruit then you’ll like jackfruit. Don’t forget to keep the seeds.

There are many benefits to jackfruit. It has been eaten by those who need help with digestive tract. It is said to help us maintain healthy vision as well.

Looks like a crazy fruit there. I know my dad talked about it a lot as he was from Oregon. But honestly when we would go to visit there we’d get mostly blackberries or cherries. Although that was what was on my grandfather’s farm so it kind of makes sense I suppose.

I haven’t seen jackfruit this side of the world, but I’ve seen some people on YouTube channels preparing them and even saying that it can replace meat! It looks like a lot of work but the combination of pineapple, mango and banana sounds glorious!
