Noahs Ark

posted in: Unit Study | 20

Noahs ark is one bible story that every child knows and loves. I mean what is there not to love about a boat filled with animals? This is a very sad story actually. It saddens me that only Noah was found to be good while everyone was deep in sin. It did not take long for Noah and his sons to sin again after the flood. The great news is that we have salvation through Jesus Christ.

Did you know that Noah walked with God ? And trusted God? I mean you really had to trust God to be build an ark that took 120 years in a place where there was no sign of rain. Noah made the ark using gopher wood. We tried to look for gopher wood but could not find any. Apparently gopher wood was much like redwood.

Map Before the Flood

If you google maps before the flood you’ll find a few different ones. Once you have a print out of the map you can use a  rhombicuboctahedron which you can get at the dollar store.

Clean and Unclean Animals

Now we all have heard that the animals came into the ark in pairs but did you know that this isn’t exactly true. The unclean animals came in by pairs but 7 of the clean animals came into the ark. The reason they came in by 7 was because God had planned for Noah and his children to bring the clean ones as sacrifices once the flood stopped.

The clean animals are mammals that chew the cud and part the hoof. Some examples of clean animals are antelopes, moose, ox, reindeer, giraffe, and goat. The unclean animals would be pig, fox, donkey, rabbit, and so on. There are a lot of unclean animals.

The clean fish are fish with fins and scales such as carp, bluegill, cod, and so on. The unclean fish would be catfish, shark, and squid.

The clean birds had clean characteristics. These are dove, duck, pigeon, turkey, quail, and so on. The unclean birds were birds of prey and those that were scavengers such as raven, coot, woodpecker, and so on.

The only insects that are clean were that of the locusts family such as grasshoppers and crickets.

We have a collection of animals and insects in our nature find corner so we would pick each one up and ask if it was clean or not clean.

Quilled Animals

Recently when we explored Morro Bay we came across quilled cards and we wanted to make our own animal creations using strips of colorful paper. It does take some time but we had so much fun. There are so many instructional videos on-line. We ordered all our supplies off Amazon. We ordered paper quilling strips, tacky glue, and slotted quilling tools. This is our new hobby.

The Two Birds

Did you know that Noah first sent forth a raven out ? Now the raven never came back because it found food: dead carcasses. Next, Noah sent out a dove and the dove found no place to for the sole of her foot and came back so Noah tried again after seven days have passed and the dove this time came back with an olive leaf. This helped Noah understand that the water was descending. So Noah kept the dove for another seven days and this time the dove never returned.

Noah was an amazing birdwatcher.

Doves are related to pigeons so we decided to dissect and learn more about the Pigeon Rock Dove. You can order yours from home science tools.

Rainbow : Sand Pendulum

” I have set my rainbow in the clouds as the sign of my covenant with the earth. ” – Genesis 9:13. God promised that he would never destroy every living thing again. The rainbow is a beautiful reminder of Gods promise. I love seeing the rainbow.

We have done many science experiments involving rainbow but we have never made a sand pendulum. This is so fun to make. We bought colorful sand at Walmart. All you need is a water bottle, sand, a table cloth, and string. It is one of the cheapest activities and one that can be enjoyed over and over again. Cut an empty bottle in half. Discard the bottom part of the bottle. Make a pretty good size hole in the cap. Cover it with tape until your ready. Make holes in the bottle so that you can put string through it and then hang up on the ceiling. Once your ready you can remove the tape and move your bottle clockwise.

Thank you for reading our post. We share a new post every Tuesday and Thursday at 8pm.

You could say this is such a perfect bonding situation for both faith and science! Noah’s Ark story has always captivated me ever since I was a child, maybe it’s the involvement of innocent animals that made it close to the heart.
