Chicken Coop

When we moved to the country we knew that the first thing we needed to get were chickens. Once you’ve had homegrown chicken meat or eggs you’ll never want the store bought again. Raising chickens is easy. They eat scraps and our left over food.

In 1918 Uncle Sam expected everyone to raise their own chickens. It is during difficult times when people realize how important it is to be self sufficient. Chickens are amazing because they forge for their own food, turn kitchen scraps into nitrogen-rich compost, remove harmful garden insects, and lay healthy eggs.

“The meat our society consumes today comes mostly from domestically raised animals. As human civilization has evolved toward urban living, the need for wild game in the diet has decreased and the demand for domestic animal meat products has greatly increased. We are no longer a society of hunters and gathers like our ancestors were, though there are groups who still rely on wild game as part of their diets.”-Philip Hasheider.

We got Canadian White Chantecler breeder quality flock. We got them because they are large, calm, and cold hardy. The rooster is so gentle too. They were already laying eggs when we got them which is such a blessing because we were able to have organic eggs. We haven’t had to buy any eggs for a few weeks now. We have one rooster and four hens. We get around three to four eggs a day. In the near future we want to add a few more chickens that lay different color eggs.

Below are pictures and a video on how we created our chicken coop. We do let out our rabbits to free roam a few hours a day and our chickens get along with them very well.

The chicken coop looks fantastic! Yall did a great job creating a nice home for these animals. I like the tree branches as steps; such a nice touch. I like the picture shot through the fence the best!

For years I’ve wanted a chicken coop with some chickens but I’ve wondered how they would do if I traveled and wasn’t there. But you guys travel often so they must do fine without us humans, haha.

What a fun family project! Your daughter resembles you so much.

One thing’s for certain.. you’ll have plenty of eggs for Easter! Hope you all have a blessed Easter!
